A short history of Uptown
Just thirty years ago, Uptown Denver (better known as North Capitol Hill) looked totally different. There were real issues with crime and poverty, and the area was known for government buildings and corporate offices.
However, Uptown Denver has seen a surge of development over the past couple of decades, and it’s now a favorite place to live for millennials and working professionals.
Throughout the neighborhood, you’ll find coffee shops, boutiques, hotels, and exercise studios, along with a friendly atmosphere.
Top things to do in North Capitol Hill
If you’re moving to Denver and are looking for things to do, you’re spoiled for choice. Huge attractions like the Denver Zoo and Denver Museum are right on your doorstep. But here are a couple of little-known things to do in Uptown.
Grab a bite
17th Avenue is known as Restaurant Row and is the heart of the neighborhood. A few of our favorite places are Olive & Finch, Stoney’s Uptown, and Steuben’s.
If you’re vegan, you’ll love WaterCourse Foods – they serve delicious vegan comfort food and have a great drinks menu to match.
Visit Monster World
If you’re into horror movies, Monster World is a must-visit. It’s a pop-up event in North Capitol Hill featuring animatronic monsters made of latex. Many are used as props in movies, and you’re allowed to get up close and personal with the exhibits for pictures. Be warned – you’ll have more than a few jump scares!
Catch a show at The Beacon
The Beacon is a trippy bar with immersive art rooms that will make you feel like you’re in a different dimension. The cocktail menu is great, the staff is friendly, and it’s easy to get lost in the colorful exhibits.
Real estate
One of the best things about Uptown Denver is the eclectic mix of houses on the market. From apartments and lofts to 1920s townhouses, there is something to suit almost any style and budget.
The boundaries of Uptown Denver are 20th Ave, Broadway, Colfax, Downing, and Park Avenue. If you’re in the market to buy a home, the median price in Uptown Denver is $480,000. However, prices range from $100K to $1.3M.
If you’re looking to rent an apartment in Noth Capitol Hill, a one-bed costs an average of $1,494. In comparison, the average rent for a two-bedroom apartment is $1,983.
Cost of Living & Employment
Uptown Denver is an affordable area, which is why it’s a popular choice with young professionals. The median household income for Uptown Denver is $69,481, which is slightly lower than the Denver average of $75,646.
Most professionals living in Uptown work in the nearby Downtown Denver, which is about five minutes by car. However, be warned, public transit connections are not the best – it’s around a 15-minute walk to the nearest rail line.
Favorite places
There are some great places that make North Capitol Hill stand out. Here are just a couple of our favorite places.
Benedict Fountain Park
Sitting over on Logan Street, Benedict Fountain Park is one of the few parks near Uptown. It was recently renovated and now features a playground, walking trails, and improved landscaping.
If you love the outdoors, the park will definitely become one of your favorite hangouts.
